NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- Six players from Monroe College's women's soccer team recently committed to join NCAA programs in the fall.
The players and the programs they are joining are:
- Gabriela Braga - Creighton University
- Gabrielle Bluford - Wilmington University (NCAA Division 2 program)
- Aline De Lima - Baylor University
- Kathellen Sousa Feitoza - University of Louisville
- Tiffany Martinez - Iona College
- Jordan Wainwright - Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi
Twenty of the team's athletes have advanced to NCAA programs over the past three years, leading every other NJCAA program.
Five of the six student-athletes are advancing to Division 1 institutions.
Monroe College's women's soccer program was founded four years ago. The team earned the National Championship in 2014 and were semi-finalists in 2015.
"Talent alone will not get you into a top flight NCAA program -- athletes must commit themselves to development in all aspects of their lives," said coach Jonathan Garbar. "We offer high-level athletes, including those for whom English is not their native language, the support and resources they need to bolster their academic credentials to meet NCAA requirements. Additionally, we provide a one-of-a-kind environment that motivates and inspires student-athletes to attack their goals, while holding them accountable."
"These six young women exemplify the four pillars of our program's philosophy: 'passion, preparation, purpose and … progress,'" said Garbar. "They not only bought into our philosophy, but they made it their own and brought it to another level. Just as they are now advancing to the next level, so too has our program due to their commitment, loyalty and professionalism. While we will miss their presence deeply, both on and off the field, they have earned the privilege of knowing that they are forever Mustangs, and forever family."
