To The Editor:

New Rochelle's School and Library elections are Tuesday, May 17.

Here are my recommendations: Rachel Relkin and Todd Kern for school trustees.

Now completing her first term on the school board, Relkin is running for re-election.

She has been a thoughtful, informed, and engaged leader who has earned the confidence of colleagues, administrators and constituents.

She played a vital role in the city-school dialogue surrounding downtown development and helped to formulate standards requiring developers to contribute to school infrastructure needs.

Relkin has the ability to balance determined advocacy for students with an appreciation for our community's broader context.

Todd Kern, a first-time candidate, brings a lot to the table, including outstanding professional experience.

As an education innovator, Kern co-founded 2Revolutions, and organization that works with educators on building new learning models.

Kern, who has two children in public schools, has been a youth sports coach, sits on the Fund for Educational Excellence’s board and is an adviser to My Brother's Keeper.

As a candidate, Kern's goals are excellence, equity and innovation.

He believes kids deserve the best possible opportunities to develop skills they need to succeed, the district’s diversity is its strength and schools need to embrace technology to stay ahead in an ever-changing world..

Kern’s leadership skills were called on when he chaired a non-partisan citizens budget panel that was made up of people with widely varying opinions and personality types. In less capable hands, it might have been a disaster, but Kern emerged from this process with the respect of every participant and nearly universal support for a. package of recommendations. He accomplished this with patient regard for competing opinions, clear thinking and unflinching honesty.

Dierdra Gray Clark, Greg Varian, and Yadira Ramos Herbert are running unopposed for the Library Board. They are fully committed to the library and its role in the community. I’m offering them my strong, heartfelt endorsements.

Also, please vote"yes" on the annual budgets for the school district and public library, and the $106 million capital bond for school repairs and modernization.

Sincerely,

Noam Bramson
