As part of the Crowdsourced Placemaking process that began earlier this year, local officials are teaming with developers from RDRXR to gather input from the community regarding what they are looking for in “the most ambitious redevelopment in New Rochelle history.”
Since then, there have been several “idea generating meet-ups,” and since then, the public has been tasked with voting on those ideas on the NR Future website, with the top choices to be considered in the “Recommended Action Plan,” that is being put together by the developers to be submitted to city officials.
The initial deadline was early June, but after listening to the community’s request, that has been extended to July 15.
“As we take off here in New Rochelle, tremendous successes have already occurred. New Rochelle’s rate of involvement is the greatest we have ever had during our crowdsourced placemaking process this early in the process,” Brandon Palanker from RDRXR stated. “However, our collective objectives are set especially high in New Rochelle and we have not reached nearly enough residents for our initial ideas campaign.”
“We have heard your concerns about this limited time frame, and as your developer, we are listening. In fact, we brought this issue to the attention of city leadership and they agreed 100 percent.”
The proposal from RDRXR is poised to make the Metro-North train station a “door to the community,” with an emphasis on the arts, a new library, cultural arts center and garden atrium and amphitheater around Ruby Dee Park.
When the redevelopment is fully underway, it is expected to generate 12,000 temporary construction jobs and nearly 5,000 permanent full-time jobs for the community.
The next NR Future meet-up with the developers will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 28 at Cross-Cultural Solutions on Clinton Place.
