Brother Kevin P. Connolly, 79, New Rochelle Resident

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Brother Kevin P. Connolly died Sunday, May 29 at the provincial house of the Salesians of Don Bosco in New Rochelle. He was 79.

He was born Jan. 29, 1937, in Brooklyn, the son of Peter and Mary Fitzpatrick Connolly. He joined the Salesians Sept. 8, 1956. He was assigned to Don Bosco Tech in Paterson, N.J. in 1956, where he taught printing and coached various sports. In 1962, he was sent to Don Bosco Juniorate in Haverstraw, where he trained candidates for the brotherhood, taught printing and was athletic director. In 1965, he went to Tampa for a 16-year stint as athletic director and coach, print shop manager and teacher.

In 1981, he was assigned to Don Bosco Technical High School in Boston, where he served as athletic director for four years. He served four years in East Boston on the staff of the Salesian Boys and Girls Club while taking courses at Boston and Emmanuel colleges. He studied at Andover Newton Theological School in 1989, took summer courses at Rutgers, worked as a clinical pastoral counselor/chaplain at Boston City Hospital and at the Detention Home for Boys in Boston. He attained a certificate in alcohol counseling from Boston College. He graduated from Hazelden in 1991 as a clinical pastoral counselor.

In 1991, he went to Salesian High School in New Rochelle, where he was a member of the guidance department for nine years. He earned a bachelor's degree in pastoral ministry and chemical dependency at Iona College in 2000. He moved to the provincial house in 2014.

He is survived by his brothers, Vincent and Thomas; and numerous nephews, nieces, great-nephews and great-nieces.

All services will be conducted at the Salesian High School Chapel, 148 E. Main St., New Rochelle. Visiting hours will take place from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday. A funeral Mass will take place at 10 a.m. Friday. Burial will take place at 2 p.m. at the Salesian Cemetery, 3 Craigville Road, Goshen.
