Mariah Bigaud was applauded with warm welcome at the Davenport Club on Thursday, where she was awarded a $1000 scholarship for her help in giving back to the community. Bigaud, who is a New Rochelle High School student entering her senior year, was given the scholarship for her participation with the Boys & Girls Club over the last two years.
Bigaud, now 16, grew up as one of four children in her family, and was a member of the Boys and Girls Club. Two years ago, she decided to give back to the program that had helped her grow by becoming a Counselor In Training (CIT). "They realized I was so good at being a CIT that I was asked to work with the SMART program, an after-school intervention program that helps with at-risk boys and girls.
The $1000 scholarship is intended to cover the cost of applying to college something the parents and audience members of the ceremony agreed was a steep expense.
In the fall, Bigaud will enter her senior year at New Rochelle High School. "I'm so proud of her accomplishments," said her mother, Carmen Bigaud. "She worked really hard in school -- and she was always a bright child." Shes planning on applying to a pre-med program, in the hopes that she can become a pediatrician. Bigaud is now looking for a summer job. But if that doesnt pan out, she says shell volunteer at her local hospital.
