New Rochelle Continues Gathering Ideas For Redevelopment Vision

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – After spending weeks asking the community about what they think is most important in the radical New Rochelle redevelopment, those tasked with shaping the vision for the future of downtown are putting it to a vote, with the most popular ideas being included in the final recommended plans.

At their latest community “idea-generating” meeting, officials with master developer RDRXR narrowed down the brainstormed ideas into six breakout groups: New Rochelle’s historic culture; the Waterfront; local business culture; the arts; the beautification of the city and the public relations and media groups for the project.

Local residents now will have the opportunity to vote on those ideas, which will require several hundred “likes.” The top two ideas in each of the categories will then be included in the Recommended Action Plan Campaign, which will be submitted to city officials June 15.

According to the developers, the action plan “includes economic studies, market analyses and zoning recommendations to determine a triple-bottom-line – economically, socially and environmentally beneficial – vision for downtown New Rochelle."

As of Friday, some of the most popular ideas include a fine arts performing center, outdoor waterfront amphitheater and bookstore café. Other ideas include a dog park, updated library and concert venue.

There will be another “idea prioritization” from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Monday, May 11 at Cross-Cultural Solutions on Clinton Place. There will then be a “hitting our goals meet-up” at the same time and place Thursday, May 28.
