NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Several Westchester County students ended their long holiday break on a high note, volunteering with the Westchester Habitat for Humanity on the last weekend before they head back to school.

Dozens of high school and college volunteers spent the last Saturday of holiday vacation preparing for Dias de los Reyes, Habitat for Humanity’s first celebration on Sunday in New Rochelle.

Habitat’s reach wasn’t limited to just New Rochelle on Saturday, however. While volunteers were busy preparing for the Sunday celebration, others were busy in Tuckahoe, painting the facilities of WestCOP Eastchester Community Action Partnership (ECAP), another Westchester organization dedicating to bettering the community.

Meanwhile, Habitat volunteers from Fordham University continued the organization’s dedication to helping the tri-state area recover from Superstorm Sandy by “starting the New Year right with volunteering,” Habitat's Executive Director Jim Killoran said.

This is just the beginning of what is expected to be a busy year for local volunteers at the Westchester Habitat for Humanity. Next week, they begin their Martin Luther King build-a-thon, which will utilize more than 150 volunteers from throughout the county.

“We live by #volunteers,” Killoran added in an e-mail. “We have had 15,000 volunteers, and that is not nearly enough. They help us in the hurricane homes, we transform neighborhoods in Westchester and we feel great helping others. Join us in 2015.”

Those interested in volunteering with the team at Westchester Habitat for Humanity can e-mail relief@habitatwc.org.
