On Friday, city officials announced the launch of Westchester County’s first bicycle sharing program, which will consist of next-generation technology at various bike docking stations throughout New Rochelle.
In partnership with city development companies P3GM and E3 Think, New Rochelle will soon offer a privately funded bike sharing program to promote a healthier, more environmentally-conscious alternative to traveling around the city.
“Our city is committed to sustainable transportation alternatives,” New Rochelle Mayor Noam Bramson said. “By taking a step back from cars and busses, even just once in awhile, we can reduce emissions, traffic and parking congestion while becoming healthier in the process.”
In a statement, P3GM Operations Manager Pedro Cabassa said that the developers will work with team with the community to maximize the potential of the bike share program, which is set for a fall launch.
“It’s exciting to partner with a community-driven city like New Rochelle to develop a program for residents, students and visitors,” he said. “We are working closely with local stakeholders to tailor the system’s design and to select sponsorship partners that are committed to brining the first bike share program to Westchester County.”
According to the developers, “unlike other traditional dock-dependent programs, the smart bike technology is less reliant on expensive docking systems. With GPS location capabilities on the bikes, users can find, rent and return them using a mobile app.”
“The New Rochelle Bike-Share program is a key element in our quality-of-life toolbox.” New Rochelle Development Commissioner Luiz Aragon said. “Our focus citywide is to help New Rochelle evolve as a place where pedestrians, bikers and drivers share our streets healthily and safely”.
