New Rochelle Council On The Arts Celebrates Its 40th Year

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- Forty years. That's how long the New Rochelle Council on the Arts (NRCA) has been in existence and to celebrate, the non-profit organization is celebrating by sponsoring a series of monthly “Arts Encounters” as a way to bring art directly to where people live.

“The idea is to remind everybody how the arts enrich our daily lives with a series of unexpected Arts Encounters” -- pop up performances in public spaces all around New Rochelle,” explained Theresa Kump NRCA President.

"We hope to keep the community guessing about where and when the next Arts Encounter will happen. It might be as simple as live music at the train station or as choreographed as a dance performance in a building lobby.”

Gentle hint: The first Arts Encounter is scheduled for the end of the month.

In other anniversary news, NRCA has made grants to four local arts organizations thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor. The group donated $2,000 each to the Songcatchers, Tutti Bravi, Symphony of Westchester and the Sound Shore Chorale.

The anonymous donation included a contribution to NRCA as well, with funds allocated to specific programs. Leghorn, a longtime New Rochelle resident, has been involved with NRCA since 2007. In addition to serving as Vice President she was the organizer of the Sound Shore Shakespeare Festival , worked with Judith Weber to establish ArtsFest (originally ClayFest), and, with Lynn Green, chaired the popular Dining With the Arts fundraisers.

An Art History major at NYU, Leghorn said she enjoyed the challenge of working as the founding director of the Museum of Arts & Culture at New Rochelle High School, which led to her involvement with NRCA.
