NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- Students at the Issac E. Young Middle School in New Rochelle have been preparing for weeks for a special visit by social commentator, political activist, and author Kevin Powell on Thursday, March 24.
His book, "The Education of Kevin Powell: A Boy's Journey into Manhood," explores how overcoming adversity helps shape a person's ability to become resilient and responsible adults.
Students in Seventh and Eighth Grades have been preparing for Powell's visit with classroom lessons, lunchtime reading groups, and after-school book clubs for the last several weeks.
This important social-emotional learning initiative has been led by school psychologists Susan Owens-Billlups and Karina Villalona, and school social workers Angélica Guel and Charise Littlejohn.
