Hundreds flocked to local grocery stores early in the week, creating congested aisles and lengthy lines as shoppers stocked up before Westchester County was turned into a winter wonderland.
Yonkers resident Kim Reynolds, who bought just a quart of milk and fresh fruit at the Eastchester Stop and Shop, said she waited in line for nearly 10 minutes before being able to check out.
“Things can always be worse. Just like I needed to pick up a few things, other people are going to need a few things,” she said. “I was in the area and thought I’d stop by on my way home from work. I guess I should have gone to a convenience store.”
According to an employee at the New Rochelle location, the store was prepared for the storm, and received extra shipments of bread, eggs and milk in advance of the inclement weather. In preparation of the frenzy of customers they expected on Wednesday night, additional employees were also called in.
“Most of us are here, it’s always crazy before it snows or there’s a hurricane,” she said. “It’s even busier at night, once everyone is back from work and prepping for the weather.”
Nicole Fisher, who had a full cart of groceries in New Rochelle, said she didn’t consider the incoming snowstorm before going shopping.
“I walked in and it was packed, and I had no idea why,” she said while waiting to checkout. “I was waiting [in the deli section] for a few minutes, and finally overheard someone talking about getting a foot of snow.”
Not all shoppers went to the major grocery stores to do their shopping. Looking to avoid the lines and glut of people at chains, Theresa Kelly went to 7-11 in Scarsdale to pick up a few essentials on Thursday.
“The major food stores get so crazy whenever there’s some bad weather, it honestly makes me nervous to go to them,” she said. “I’m better off doing a little more shopping here than I would be there.”
