As Democrat I respect Gov. George Pataki's stance against Trump's divisive and arrogant campaign. The attack is Mexico is shameful and below the dignity of Americans. Real candidates talk about how they will improve our Country. Let Trump address unfair tax breaks for huge corporations, sending jobs overseas, and poverty wages allocated by greedy and grossly overpaid CEOs. View Comment
Thank you President Obama for securing a peaceful resolution with Iran.. while the war mongers won't be fatting their wallets, we the people won't need to bury any young Americans. Also thank you for opening the doors wider for those wishing to serve in the Armed Forces Most of us decent citizens respect all who risk their lives regardless of their sexual preferences. Thank you Rev. Jeanette Phillips for your committed service to our community. You richly deserved this honor. Also thank you to Congresswoman Lowey and Mayor Catalina for your support in acknowledging Rev. Philips's exceptional record of fine work. View Comment
The animal sightings give us a choice of a reaction.. the hope is one of compassion, empathy, and some common sense. The public is best served when some good judgement is used in contacting the Police. The truth is that we have much more to fear from other humans who commit crimes every day than animals. In the meantime.. some simple precautions can help.. not leaving food out along with covering garbage. View Comment
A wonderful ceremony! As a graduate of the 1990 Class, I missed the commencement.However I was invited as an alumni to attend this year's event in cap and gown. At last after 25 years!!! Much thanks to all involved in this effort. It's never too late!!! View Comment
The so called donation of dead deer meat to the homeless is a thin smokescreen to help justify slow and painful death caused by deer bow hunting. It's one thing to post here that "it's rare to see a wounded animal wander off." It's quite another to actually see it happen.. because if the public got to see this, up close and personal, there wouldn't be a dry eye in the house. We can do better. View Comment
Any solution needs to embrace compassion and empathy. What kind of example are we providing for children who are already exposed to violence in movies, music, and video games ? Many remain extremely disappointed in the so called TeaTown "PRESERVE" which has taken the lethal road a step further by offering bow hunting. If we were to post a video of a deer slowly dying with an arrow stuck in it's face...most would turn away. Yet Teatown somehow has turned away from profound suffering. Not only turned away but rewrote it's own mission to promote such cruelty . Nature Preserves are expected to set a high standard for respect for wildlife, not profit from the perverted joy some relish in taking a life. Let's evolve toward a more kind and loving approach. Yet another Extreme GOP created "scandal" and a deflection from a real newsworthy item.. the 47 elected officials who broke process to concur with Iran. So far over 200,000 Americans have signed a petition to protest this under-minding of a possible peace process. Even the Iranian officials have laughed at them saying they know don't know their own Constitution. In addition many GOP members have also condemned this misconduct. MY SIGN..RESPECT THE PROCESS AND AMERICAN CITIZENS. View Comment
What well informed and educated experts from the Mayo Clinic have to say;
"The health factor;A plant-based diet, which emphasizes fruits, vegetables, grains, beans, legumes and nuts, is rich in fiber, vitamins and other nutrients. And people who eat only plant-based foods — aka vegetarians — generally eat fewer calories and less fat, weigh less, and have a lower risk of heart disease than non-vegetarians do.
Just eating less meat has a protective effect. A National Cancer Institute study of 500,000 people found that those who ate the most red meat daily were 30 percent more likely to die of any cause during a 10-year period than were those who ate the least amount of red meat. Sausage, luncheon meats and other processed meats also increased the risk. Those who ate mostly poultry or fish had a lower risk of death."
"Humans were designed to eat meat; we are omnivores, after all
The term omnivorous doesn’t mean must eat some animal products. It means capable of subsisting on both plant and animal matter. Of the two, we are able to thrive without eating animals; however, if we eat no plants, we die. In fact, decades of scientific evidence have demonstrated that humans have no biological need to consume flesh, eggs or dairy products. We can get all the nutrients we need on a plant-based diet, without the unhealthy animal protein and cholesterol, and without inflicting needless suffering and death on billions of animals."
It's always a clear indication of a lack of information when one attempts to pit one problem against another. Do the research and you will find many health problems associated with meat intake. Did this video make you uncomfortable? For your information the Meat Industry is attempting to take away your basic rights to see how your food is processed via "Ag-Gag". Tells you a lot when they want to keep the details of their operation a secret. Doesn't it ? Thank you Kate for your important message. View Comment
Mr. Testa has been acting a bit like the Oz Witch. He is the only person who has opposed the Oz project. Yet when he was Mayor he in fact promoted Peekskill's connection to Oz. These facts are undeniable; Baum attended the Peekskill Military Academy, the play was shown at Colonial Theater which was located in Peekskill in 1905, and Baum had to walk on Peekskill's yellow bricks. Testa voiced no such objections when the newly opened Holiday Inn invited the Oz Project to their grand opening. He was quite anxious to be included with the photos taken with the Oz Characters. Most will agree that running well planned events which involve our community trumps a silly debate over small details no one cares about. Peekskill is a City of abundance, there is plenty of room to embrace an iconic movie. The Oz project is a non profit organization which has hosted several events including a Celebration of Frank Baum's Birthday at the Branding Iron, An Oz Karaoke Afternoon at the Bean Runner, a Oz Day at the Peekskill Library, and marched at Peekskill's St Patrick's Day parade.For more information or to join the fun call 930-7588 View Comment
From John Testa's web-site. A City of Peekskill Press Release when he served as Mayor,"Part of the reason for Testa’s intensive support is that he himself is a crucial part of Baum’s Peekskill story. Although records show that Baum had a tough time going to school in the City, he always considered himself an alumnus and felt he had learned much while attending the institution.
No sign of this was clearer than the signed first editions of every one of the Oz books that Baum sent to the Academy. Baum wrote 14 Oz books between 1900 and his death in 1919. One of Testa’s most powerful childhood memories is seeing those books in the Peekskill Military Academy Museum when he was less than 10 years old."
