NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The New Rochelle varsity football team did not like the way the 2011 season concluded, so it returned in August, for preseason, with a renewed hunger.
The Huguenots rebounded to win the Section 1 Class AA football title and went on to win the state championship for the first time since 2003.
The football team’s state title was one of the top sports stories in 2012 in New Rochelle .
New Rochelle, which won the 2010 Section 1 Class AA championship, was upset by John Jay-East Fishkill in the 2011 Section 1 Class AA semifinals.
During preseason, linemen Justin Douglas and Ray Ganley said the Huguenots wanted to regain their sectional title.
Among alumni highlights, New Rochelle graduate Tommy Koehler made his major-league debut in September as a member of the Miami Marlins.
Koehler, a right-handed pitcher, appeared in eight games, including a start against the New York Mets on Oct. 3. He finished 0-1 with a 5.40 earned run average and 13 strikeouts in 13 and a third innings.
In February, current junior Nick Barbaria won the Section 1 Division I 99-pound wrestling championship and followed it up with a sixth-place finish at the New York State Wrestling Championships.
Once the wrestling season concluded, veteran coach Jim Guccione retired. Guccione had been the New Rochelle wrestling coach for more than 30 years. Guccione’s former wrestler and state place-finisher Eddie Ortiz was chosen as the new varsity coach .
Rasaun Young returned to his alma mater as the New Rochelle boys varsity basketball coach in October and is assisted by his older brother, Rashiem.
Rasaun Young had an outstanding basketball career at New Rochelle. A three-year varsity starter, he led Section 1 in scoring his senior year and was named the Section 1 and New York state Player of the Year. Young went on to a fine career at the University of Buffalo.
