State Boys Soccer Title Highlights Fall Varsity Season At New Rochelle HS

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- After a 29-year hiatus, the New Rochelle High School Huguenots won the state boys championship.

The boys' soccer team defeated Fairport High School 2-1 on Nov. 13  to win the New York State Class AA title, highlighting the fall season at New Ro HS. The match was played at Feller Field in Middletown.

Senior striker, Harwan Alzuabidi, scored the game's first goal just short of the 20-minute mark. Two minutes later, Fairport equalized.

Early in the second half, New Rochelle High School junior  midfielder, Omar Espinoza, scored the eventual game-winning goal. From then on, the Huguenots managed to defend their narrow lead.

The Huguenots faced a challenging road to get to the final: They mounted a near impossible four-goal comeback against Calhoun High School in the NYS Class AA semifinal match a day earlier.
