Ramondelli Hits Milestone in New Rochelle Win

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – Since early last December, the New Rochelle varsity hockey team has been red hot, winning five consecutive games, including one over archrival Mamaroneck.

The Huguenots were looking to extend their streak to six and in order to do so, they would face a gritty Carmel team.

Carmel threw a scare in New Rochelle early and late, but the Huguenots had an answer each time in a 4-2 win at the Ice Hutch.

Joey Ramondelli had three assists, including one on brother, Chris Ramondelli’s goal, his 100th varsity point. Kenny McLean had a goal and an assist and goalie Greg Feliu stopped 24 shots as New Rochelle improved to 9-3.

Chris Ramondelli hit the century mark for points in the first period on a rebound of a McLean shot. McLean took a pass from Joey Ramondelli, setting up his shot.

“I was really happy for Chris because he has worked hard for it and he deserves it,” Joey Ramondelli said of Chris’ milestone. “It was nice to assist on the goal because we work together so well.”

Carmel would rebound to even the score at 1-1 in the second period, on the first of Jackie Barnes’ two goals. It was a power-play goal at 10:14 of the second period. The Carmel Rams momentum was quickly halted by the Huguenots, who scored 64 seconds later.McLean carried into the Carmel zone, along the right wing, and flipped a centering to Andre Vigroux, whose shot was stopped by Carmel goalie Ryan Smith. He was unable to control the rebound and John Valente swept the puck in.

Joey Ramondelli fed McLean 2:23 into the third period and he increased the lead to 3-1. Ramondelli made the play by skating by Carmel’s defenseman down the right wing before gaining control in the face-off circle and hearing McLean.

“I saw I had a step on him so I chipped the puck by him and then I heard Kenny call for the puck,” Ramondelli said.

Barnes shaved the lead to one goal with 5:21 on the clock. Carmel got a late power play, but was unable to sustain any pressure. Vigroux blocked the initial shot from Carmel’s defenseman at the blue line and the Rams’ spent the next 45 seconds regrouping. They returned to New Rochelle’s zone, but Joey Ramondelli grabbed the puck and hit Brett Barry for a short-handed goal into an empty net.

“We knew Carmel was going to be a tough test because they are one of the top teams in our league,” Joey Ramondelli said. “This was our sixth win in a row and we’ve started off the second half playing good.”
