Pace Defeats New Haven Chargers In Softball

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. -- The Pace University women's softball team gained a win against the New Haven Chargers on Tuesday, April 8, and improved its record to 4-4 in the Northeast-10 Southwest Division.

The Setters scored a pair of runs early in the first inning. Freshman Shelby Yung led off the game with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Freshman Nikole Larm drove in Yung with a single and scored later on a single by freshman Haley Hernandez for a 2-0 Pace lead.

Pace added three runs in the final two innings as freshman Alicia Marino drove in a run in the sixth on a fielder's choicer. 

Larm extended the Pace lead to 5-0 with an RBI single to score junior Jean Drury. Before  the runs by Pace, the Chargers added a three-run home run in the seventh. Freshman Kaitlyn Nelson shut the door on a comeback as the Setters held on for the win.

For the Setters, Larm went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, and Hernandez also went 2-for-3. McCann pitched 5 1/3 scoreless innings, scattered six hits and struck out five. Freshman Kira Knight allowed three runs on three hits and struck out one.

The final score was 5-3.

The Setters will be back in action on Wednesday, April 9, as Pace hosts the Caldwell Cougars in a single game  at 3 p.m. on the Briarcliff campus.
