During the year, FBU holds 40 invitation only camps across the United States. From those camps players are selected at each grade level and invited to attend the Top Gun camp.
Powell first attended FBU's three-day Northern Virginia camp as a quarterback. There he was coached by Matt D’Orazio, a former Arena Football quarterback and League MVP, and two time Arena Bowl champion and MVP.
At the camp, players worked on techniques to help them become more proficient at their individual position. In order to evaluate the techniques they learned, as well as their skill level, players participated in head-to-head competitions.
Based on Powell's performance at FBU's Northern Virginia’s camp he was extended an invitation to attend FBU' elite Top Gun camp. This camp is also a three-day event where the players work with top coaches from the NFL while competing against the best players at their grade level from across the country.
