The competition is set to take place at the New Balance Track and Field Center at the Amory in upper Manhattan. This is the first NJCAA national track and field competition to be held within the five boroughs and the first time Monroe has hosted a national athletic event, officials said.
The competition will host 70 teams from 14 states and more than 650 athletes. Schools from states as far away as Arizona and as close as New Jersey will be represented.
"Monroe College is proud to host the nation's best track athletes in New York and the New Balance Track and Field Center, which is one of the fastest and most well-known indoor facilities in the world," said Monroe Executive Vice President Marc Jerome. "As Monroe students well know, the NY metro area provides unique opportunities for growth, development, and achievement and we hope all visiting athletes and their coaches make the most of them during their stay. Above all, we wish them good luck in the indoor nationals." The Monroe Mustangs will also perform in the national meet.
"The rapid growth of Monroe Mustangs track and field is impressive," said head coach Mark Goodman. "In just two years, we've more than doubled our number of national qualifiers and we can't wait to showcase them on this national stage that we are hosting at this fantastic arena. To say we're excited would be an understatement." In 2012 Monroe sent nine athletes to the indoor nationals. Last year and this year there are more than 20 whose performances qualified them to compete. "Our achievements are no accident," Goodman said. "We have incredible assistant coaches and overwhelming support from our administration and staff. Also, these young athletes are some of the most dedicated I've ever seen."
