NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - New Rochelle's CHAMPS Boxing Club is reaching out to local youth and using the "sweet science" as an alternative to the streets.

CHAMPS serves more than 600 members, some as young as just five years old. Located on the edge of two municipal housing projects in New Rochelle, CHAMPS serves at-risk youth. Gym owner Ryan O’Leary, a member of the Board of Directors for USA Boxing and long-term New Rochelle resident, founded CHAMPS give local youth access to a healthy, positive recreation outlet.

According to LUTA, while New Rochelle youths face gang violence and other similar adversities, CHAMPS boxing club has become a welcome refuge offering boxing lessons and a support system. The gym gives New Rochelle youths the chance to benefit not only from rigorous athletic training, but also from life skills such as discipline and self-esteem. CHAMPS was recently selected for a program called the “Life Changing Project”, where starting August 7 New Rochelle residents will be able to buy gear from sportswear brand LUTA and designate 50 percent of the profits to the club,  which is in need of funding for equipment, programming, and other essentials. The project is being held as part of LUTA’s U.S. launch (they’re already well known in the UK, with Olympic super heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua as a staunch supporter). LUTA gives 50 percent of its profits directly to "Fight for Peace" , a global non-profit organization dedicated to using boxing and martial arts to help realize the potential of young people in communities affected by crime and violence. "Fight for Peace" designates Global Alumni members, including CHAMPS, to support and help each gym further develop its training programs under the "Fight for Peace" philosophy.
