The New Rochelle YMCA Sailfish swimming team has announced that veteran coach and trainer Ann Horowitz will serve as head coach of the competitive team when the pool is reopened, with tryouts scheduled for mid-March.

Before the pool was shut down for repairs on the damaged drop roof and ceiling for the better part of a year, Horowitz could be found teaching swim lessons at the YMCA, where she has served as a swim instructor for athletes with special needs. She has four years of coaching experience on summer league and high school varsity teams, training swimmers between 7 and 17-years-old.

A certified CPR/AED and first aid coach, she has competed in high school and collegiately, earning All-America, All-State and All-County honors. She began swimming at a YMCA organization in Connecticut, where she once finished in the top 5 overall nationally.

From 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. on Friday, March 18 and Monday March 21, the YMCA Sailfish team will host open tryouts.

According to Horowitz, the team will “welcome experienced swimmers, as well as those interested in making the transition from learn-to-swim or recreational swimming to competitive swimming.” She advised those interested in trying out to come ready to show off their form in freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly races.

The team requires a weekly commitment of no less than three practices, with times grouped by age and ability, both before and after school. Those interested can contact Horowitz at ahorowitz@nrymca.org.
