Swimming as his team’s anchor at the Shark Tank Short Course Meters Meet, New Rochelle math teacher Steve Newman was part of the relay for the Sarasota YMCA Masters squad, who were victorious over the team from Ventura County.

The team of Newman, Jack Groselle, Rick Walker and Kevin McCormack claimed the Masters world record in the men’s 800-yard relay for the 240-279 age group, taking down their rival Ventura County Masters team.

The Sarasota YMCA Masters team obliterated Ventura County’s former 9:00.30 mark, finishing with a time nearly 10 seconds quicker at 8:52.73. They are the first squad in that age group to break the nine-minute mark.

Relay splits from the Shark Tank Short Course Meters Meet, according to Swimming World Magazine:

  • Groselle: 2:06.81
  • Walker: 2:18.50
  • McCormack: 2:17.08
  • Newman: 2:10.34

In a post on Facebook, the New Rochelle School District celebrated Newman’s achievement.
