New Rochelle had not won the grand championship in more than two years, but that all changed Tuesday night. The Huguenots registered a score of 126.63 in the final round to overcome North Rockland, which scored 121.87.

Head coach Chrissy Stanionis, now in her 15th year at the helm, said the win was a “stepping stone” for her program, particularly because this was New Rochelle’s first competition of the year.

“Partly because our football team has been so good, we haven’t been able to go to any competitions. We’ve been traveling with our football team,” Stanionis said. “So to get out here and hit a routine like that today, first time out, in front of a crowd, is really a great way to start off our season.”

The cheerleaders have supported the football team throughout the season and all will continue to do so all the way up to the state Class AA championship on Saturday in Syracuse. So the football players returned the favor on Tuesday as they sat in the upper deck at the County Center and cheered the cheerleaders.

“We have a real good network between the two teams,” Stanionis said.

New Rochelle first won the Varsity II/Small division with a score of 118.07. Carmel finished second with 116.73 while Scarsdale placed third with 106.60. That score qualified the Huguenots for the grand champions round.
