WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – The New Rochelle High School girls basketball team suffered a crushing defeat in the semifinals of the Section 1 Class AA tournament on Thursday.
Second-seeded Our Lady of Lourdes routed No. 6 New Rochelle, 56-26, to advance to the finals on Sunday at 2 p.m.
New Rochelle trailed, 18-9, after the first quarter as Lourdes knocked down multiple open shots. Asjha White-Silas did her best to keep the Huguenots in the game as New Rochelle went on a run to trim the lead to 20-15 with 5:29 left in the second quarter.
But it was all downhill from there as Lourdes built a 26-17 lead at halftime and held New Rochelle scoreless until a White-Silas layup late in the third quarter. New Rochelle scored just four points in the third as Lourdes went up, 46-21.
Head coach Bruce Daniele pulled his starters with 3:24 left in the game as the Huguenots trailed, 54-23.
“The baskets weren’t falling,” Daniele said. “We’re a team of spurts. We just never got a spurt today. We just never got going. We’ve got to credit Lourdes. …They dared us to shoot from the outside and we just didn’t click today.”
The only bright spot for the Huguenots was the aforementioned run in the early part of the second quarter, thanks mostly to New Rochelle’s defense. But the team could not turn opportunities into points.
“Our press was working. We were getting to the ball,” Daniele said. “We just couldn’t capitalize, you know? We probably had a lot of turnovers. We probably only got two points.”
Despite the lopsided loss, the Huguenots were still one of four out of 19 Class AA girls teams to reach the County Center. And that fact, said Daniele, should make his players proud.
“It’s a special year for them. I know they don’t realize it right now, losing by 30 on the County Center floor,” Daniele said. “But I’m proud of them. I’m sure, like I said, they’re really disappointed.”
