NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – New Rochelle High School senior Alejandra Toro earned a cheerleading scholarship Tuesday night at the 2012 Cheerleading Invitational.
Toro won the Annette Hroncich Westchester County Cheerleading Scholarship, a $1,000 award that rewards cheerleaders in solid academic standing.
The senior said she was overjoyed to receive the award but said the team’s victory at the tournament was even sweeter.
“Honestly, I thought it was the most amazing feeling,” Toro said. “I’ve never won something like that before and I felt so much self-accomplishment and it was great. But it was even better to win grand champs.”
Toro said she has loved cheerleading since a young age and has been actively cheering for six years. She has been on the varsity cheerleading squad since her freshman year.
She has seen many changes in the program since then but said she has loved every minute of cheering for New Rochelle. The grand championship on Tuesday was a milestone for her in her senior year.
“It felt amazing because we haven’t won since I was a freshman,” Toro said. “Now we can prove to everybody that we did it by ourselves and we’re coming for everybody.”
The scholarship will help Toro pay her college tuition but the senior said it did something more for her.
“It just reassures me that cheerleading is something I should continue in college,” Toro said. “This is only the beginning for me. I can’t wait to do it in college.”
Toro does not yet know what college she will attend, but she has a dream destination.
“I would love to go to the University of Florida and cheer for the Florida Gators,” Toro said.
