NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Boys and Girls Club of New Rochelle has opened a PGA Sports Academy for city children looking to light it up on the links.

The PGA Sports Academy - which will serve as an introduction to golf for boys and girls between the ages of 7 and 13 – will provide children access to the sport who may have otherwise been limited by prohibitive green fees and equipment costs.

Those that participate at the academy will learn the rules of the game, while getting a background in the basis of golf by PGA Professional Rick Nielsen. Nielsen, who serves as director at the Turtle Cove Golf Center in the Bronx, said he wants to build the camper’s character while promoting an active, healthy lifestyle.

“Golf is a fun, active game that gives young people stamina, focus and skills while exposing them to a lifelong leisure activity,” he said. “Golf can also provide children served by the Boys and Girls Club a new opportunity for personal and professional development.”

Nielsen said that the academy will feature a combination of basic instruction, fitness and golf-centric games, with formal contests to reinforce skills. The academy will conclude its summer program with a trip to a local golf course where they will have the chance to demonstrate all that they’ve learned.

Quay Watkins, the executive director of the Boys and Girls Club, said that the club is one of the few in the tri-state area to offer this program.

“This will be the first time many of our members have ever held or even swung a golf club,” he said. “There are many merits to golf, including determination, focus, discipline and respect. This will help the children we serve become positive role models, and better citizens.”

Those interested in enrolling their children in the PGA Sports Academy should call (914) 235-3736.
