New Roc Basketball Classic Draws Big Crowd

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Hundreds of enthusiastic basketball fans turned out at Lincoln Park on Tuesday night to watch top-flight youth basketball in a six-game set to end the regular season of the 2012 New Roc Classic Summer Basketball League.

Presented by Team Young World with support from the New Rochelle Municipal Housing Authority, among other sponsors, the event was dubbed "Thank You Sponsors Night" and honored the Housing Authority for a $10,000 donation to the summer league.

The summer basketball league program, previously known as the New Rochelle Summer Basketball League, has been going on for more than 30 years.

“The contribution of the Municipal Housing Authority with the assistance of Executive Director Steve Horton was the most important factor in making the program work through the summer,” said Kenneth Plummer of Kensworth Consultants, who helped organize the event. “Team Young World (Raheim and Rashaun Young) and everyone involved did a great job this summer.”

Players in age-group teams from Mount Vernon, Archbishop Stepinac and Peekskill high schools joined youth teams from the New Rochelle Boys and Girls Club, House of Sports (Ardsley), Bronx Panthers, Westchester's Team 914 and Hooperstown (Mount Vernon) to participate in the summer league event.

Teammates Jalen Horton, Eddie Davis, Amadou Kamissoko and DaJuan Piper, who played for coach Steve Alvarado’s SWE team against New Ro Machines in the evening’s opener, said they were ready for the upcoming postseason.

“We’re playing the playoffs coming up,” Piper said as he prepared for the game. “We are from the Bronx, Manhattan and New Jersey (and Bedford Hills). We’re ready.”

Mount Vernon High School, the 2012 New York state champion, matched up against Stepinac High School in the evening's finale.

The first 500 young people at the event were treated to pizza, 300 T-shirts were awarded by Five Star Basketball, and free haircut coupons totaling $1,000 were given out by Bespoke Barbershop.
