MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – Mount Vernon is still reeling from Khalil Edney’s 55-foot buzzer-beater that ended the Knights' Section 1 tournament run against New Rochelle on Sunday.
Even those who weren’t at the Westchester County Center to see the improbable ending have had no trouble reliving the moment. The game-winning shot was the lead story on ESPN's "SportsCenter" at 8 p.m. Sunday. The New Rochelle team was featured on the network as well as on "Good Morning America" the following day.
“We can’t seem to get away. The ending has been on every channel since Sunday, it seems like,” resident Larry Martin said. “You have to feel for those boys, they thought they won and then it was just taken away.”
The shot gave the ninth-seeded New Rochelle a 61-60 victory, dethroning the seven-time defending champion Knights. The Huguenots will face Section 4 champion Binghamton on Tuesday in the state regional semifinal.
Outside of City Hall, Reggie James said it's all just a part of sports.
“I think they have to hold their heads high, they were just a few seconds from winning,” he said. “There’s nothing you can do about that, just have to give credit to the shooter.”
With the win, New Rochelle was crowned the Section 1 Class AA football and basketball champions, a rare feat. Edney, who was the quarterback of the football team, said it was a first for him.
“That is my first buzzer-beater on a three-pointer in high school to win a game,” he said after the game. “Winning a state football title was a great feeling, but this is just as good because of the way it happened.”
Resident Andre Perry wasn’t happy with the outcome of the game but has enjoyed the exposure Mount Vernon has received.
“We were watching on TV, and we had no idea how it was going to go. Everyone was celebrating at the same time,” he said. “It would have been nice if it went the other way, but it’s been cool to keep seeing the highlight everywhere.”
