NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Mount Vernon and New Rochelle high schools will take their 2012-13 storied boys basketball rivalry to the court Thursday.
The Huguenots will host the two-time defending New York State Class AA champions at 4:15 p.m. It is the first of two regular-season meetings between the rivals. Mount Vernon will host New Rochelle on Feb. 6.
The teams also have a possibility of meeting in the Section 1 Class AA boys basketball championships.
“This is our rivalry game so this game always brings out the best in us,” Mount Vernon point guard Joshua Doughty said. “We know everyone is going to be there to watch this game so we have to prove to everyone what we are capable of.”
Doughty has led the Knights to a 7-1 record, including a current four-game winning streak. Mount Vernon opened its league schedule with wins over Mamaroneck, Scarsdale and White Plains high schools.
New Rochelle played its best game of the season in a victory over Middletown High School on Saturday at the Hoops For A Cure showcase. This ran the Huguenots’ winning streak to four games, but it was snapped Tuesday in a 57-55 upset loss to Scarsdale High School.
