NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Monroe College women’s volleyball team’s stellar season came to a swift end Friday as the Mustangs lost in the national tournament.
Monroe entered the tournament as the No. 13 seed with a 33-5 record but lost to No. 4 Iowa Central in the first round Thursday. The Mustangs then fell to No. 5 Kirkwood (Iowa) Friday in the loser’s bracket.
Despite the back-to-back losses, head coach Nephtali Delgado Reyes told his players to stay positive after the final match.
"Hold your heads up high," Reyes said. "We set our goals to win the districts to get here and we did that. It's time now to dedicate ourselves to working hard to getting back here next year and taking the next step."
Monroe finished the historic season as one of the best 16 teams in the country and won both the region and district championships.
