Monroe Names Matt Dawson as Defensive Coordinator

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Monroe College football coach Terry Karg named former Fordham defensive coordinator Matt Dawson to the same position on the Mustangs.

Dawson is the first-ever defensive coordinator for the Monroe Mustangs, who will play football for the first time this fall.

In 2002 and 2003, Dawson was the defensive backs coach for the University of Massachusetts Minutemen, who won the 2003 Colonial Athletic Association title. He coached the linebackers and special teams unit for Central Connecticut State in 2004. The team went 8-2 and won the Northeast Conference that year.

He coached the linebackers and special teams unit at Fordham in 2006, then moved on to the University of Oregon in 2007 and 2008 as a graduate assistant coaching defensive ends.  Dawson became the linebackers coach at the University of New Hampshire in 2009 and helped the team to an 11-3 record. His last job was as defensive coordinator for the Fordham Rams.

Dawson played for three seasons as a starting outside linebacker for the University of Massachusetts from 1996 to 1999. The team won the National Championship in 1998 and Dawson was named team captain in 1999. He had 250 career tackles, 30 for a loss, to go along with 11.5 sacks and 11 pass breakups.
