NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Monroe College football team started its season and its program with a win Sunday afternoon.

The Mustangs earned the first win in program history with a 27-7 victory at Wagner (JV). Freshman quarterback Manny Cortez ran for the first touchdown in Monroe history with an eight-yard dash in the second quarter.

The defense held Wagner to just 60 yards rushing and did not allow a touchdown in the final three quarters.

"This was a win we earned with all the hard work we put in from the first day of training camp to this opening game of the season," said Monroe head coach Terry Karg. "This is a reward for the effort everyone in the program has given, players, coaches, administrators, everyone. It gets us off on the right foot for the tough road ahead."

Cortez played in all but one series Sunday and finished 9-for-11 passing for 148 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for 52 yards.

Karg worked with a handful of quarterbacks in the preseason but Cortez handled the workload Sunday.

“The offense seems to respond when he’s in there,” Karg said.

Monroe will play its first conference game Saturday at Dean College in Franklin, Mass.
