NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y.-- The Monroe College football team opened its season in convincing fashion with a 28-0 win over Wagner College's junior varsity squad on Saturday.
Freshman running backs Derrick Goliday and Donald Thomas paced the mustangs throughout. The two combined for 186 yards on 21 carries and Goliday found the end zone twice.
"You always want to win that first one," head coach Terry Karg said. "It's a reward for all the hard work you've done to get here and puts a good taste in your mouth in preparation for what's to come."
The Mustangs led 21-0 late in the game when freshman cornerback Jarell Hicks picked off a pass and returned it 99 yards for a touchdown to close out the scoring.
The Mustangs open their home season on Saturday against Dean College at 7:30 p.m. The game will be played at SUNY Purchase and admission is free.
