NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The second annual Hoops For A Cure high school basketball benefit tournament will begin at noon Saturday at Monroe College.

The girls open the four-game schedule with Saunders playing Eastchester. The boys take the court at 2 p.m. and will have it the remainder of the day starting with Saunders playing Eastchester. The 4 p.m. game will have White Plains meeting Poughkeepsie and the final game at 6 p.m. is New Rochelle against Middletown.

Saunders varsity boys’ basketball coach Anthony Nicodemo created the event with all proceeds from the day going to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.

“Last year, we wanted to do something associated with the program at Saunders,” Nicodemo said. “Saunders and the admissions people at Monroe have a really good relationship. I spoke to Gary and he asked if we would like to have the games at their arena.”

Nicodemo was referring to Gary Axelbank, Monroe College's director of development and sports information.

The tournament will be preceded by a “Captain’s Brunch,” at 11 a.m. Friday at Saunders High School. The guest speaker will be Brandon Steiner, chief executive officer of Steiner Sports Memorabilia. There will be a raffle and silent auction during the brunch.
