Monroe Basketball Teams Set for District Playoffs

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams at Monroe College need to win just one game to reach their respective national tournaments and will get a chance to do so on Saturday.

District basketball tournaments will begin at the Monroe Athletic Complex on Saturday. The women’s team, the defending NJCAA Division II National Champions, will play at 5 p.m. in a District-N semifinal game against Union County College. The men’s team will take on Hagerstown Community College in the District III finals at 7 p.m.

The winners of each of those games earn a spot in the NJCAA National Tournaments.

"This is going to be an amazing weekend of basketball at the MAC and we invite everyone in the Monroe community to come out for both of Saturday's games," said athletic director Bert Shillingford. "Our coaches and players have worked so hard and their goals are now right within their grasp. We hope our fans will get there early to gear up and help push our teams over the finish line. I know that after last weekend's action, everyone is excited to see them do it."

The women are ranked No. 15 in the country and have amassed a 25-6 this season. They will make the national tournament for the third straight season if they beat Union (21-5) on Saturday. Monroe beat Union twice this season.

The winner of that matchup will move on to face the winner of the Lackawanna-Community College of Rhode Island matchup in the district championship on Sunday at 1 p.m.

The third-ranked men’s team (29-3) can also make it back to the national tournament for the third straight year. Monroe defeated Hagerstown earlier this season, but the No. 14 Hawks (28-4) took the Mustangs to overtime in the district final last season.
