Iona Women's Soccer Picked Sixth In Preseason Poll

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Coaches from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference picked Iona College’s women’s soccer team to finish sixth in the 2012 MAAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll on Tuesday.

Gaels head coach Mike Barroqueiro agreed with the ranking but hopes to rise above it.

“Based on the past few seasons for our program, I’d say our preseason ranking is probably right where we thought it might be,” Barroqueiro said. “That being said, it certainly doesn’t change the way we feel going into this season.”

Iona racked up 45 points in the poll along with Canisius. Conference powerhouse Marist College earned 99 votes for first place, while Fairfield and Loyola finished second and third, respectively. Niagara came in fourth and Siena finished fifth. Rider, Manhattan and St. Peter’s finished out the poll.

The coaches selected Loyola’s Nichole Schiro as the Preseason Player of the Year.

Iona opens its season with a match against Fairleigh Dickinson at 4 p.m. Friday, Aug. 17.

“We have only one thing on our mind right now, and that’s working hard to develop into a team that gives itself a chance to play for championship,” Barroqueiro said. “Our girls are working hard, they’re motivated, and they are ready to leave it all out on the field. It’s definitely an exciting time to be a Gael.”
