Iona had to play a little longer on Sunday than it would have liked in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women’s water polo title match, but the Gaels spent the time wisely.
The top-seeded Lady Gaels scored twice in the first overtime period and the defense took over from there in a 10-9 victory over third-seeded Wagner College at the McCann Natatorium on the Marist College campus.
It was the second consecutive MAAC title for Iona (24-11), currently ranked 20th in the Women’s Varsity National Polls, which qualified for the NCAA Women’s Water Polo National Championships May 11-13 at San Diego State University.
Alyssa Turza scored four goals and was named the tournament’s most outstanding performer. Cecilia Leonard added three goals.
Iona beat Wagner 11-10 in overtime in its’ regular-season finale and has won 13 consecutive matches. The Gaels rallied from a 6-3 halftime deficit with five goals in the second half as the score was even at 8-8 after regulation.
