Iona Teams Run Saturday In NCAA Cross Country Championships

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- Iona College will sends its men’s and women’s cross country teams to the starting line Saturday for the NCAA Division 1 championships in Terre Haute, Ind.

The race starts at 1 p.m. at Wabash Family Sports Center and a live webcast will be shown on NCAA.com.

The Gaels are ranked eighth in the nation in the men’s poll and the women are ranked 16th. The women’s team won the Northeast Regional championship, while the men’s team finished third. Kate Avery, a junior, and senior Jake Byrne won individual titles in the regional race for Iona.

Freshman Gilbert Kirui finished 10th at regionals, while the other scorers were Mike O’Dowd, Kieran Clements and Brandon Allen.

Syracuse won the race, followed by Providence.

The Gaels women won their first-ever regional title. Avery ran 19:45.6 for the 6-kilometer course, followed by teammate Rosie Clarke. Tara Jameson, Regina Neumeyer and Marlene Delices were Iona’s other scorers. Iona won its 10th straight Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference title earlier in the fall.
