Iona Prep QuarterbackTakes Part in Skills Competition

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Iona Prep quarterback Mario Biaggi got a chance to meet former New York Giants quarterback Phil Simms on Sunday. The soon-to-be senior quarterback, like many others in attendance, was all smiles when he met the Super Bowl winner.

“It’s so cool. You see him on TV, ESPN. He’s a famous quarterback,” Biaggi said. “So yeah, it’s a really cool experience to see him live.”

Biaggi was one of 25 quarterbacks who participated in MSG Varsity’s Tri-State Quarterback Showdown on at New Rochelle High School. Simms and fellow former New York Giant Amani Toomer judged the event.

The competition featured quarterbacks from Westchester, Long Island, Connecticut and New Jersey. Biaggi said he enjoyed meeting new people from such a wide background at the event.

Biaggi started playing football at Eastchester Middle School before he attended Iona Prep. He started as quarterback as a freshman and at the junior varsity level before he moved up to varsity.

MSG Varsity’s Steve Levy, who played quarterback at Don Bosco Prep and then at University of California, organized the event and emailed Biaggi to invite him to participate in the competition.

“So far it’s been pretty cool, like the whole experience, atmosphere, all the quarterbacks in the tri-state,” Biaggi said. “It’s a pretty cool experience.”

Biaggi said before the competition started that he was not sure what to expect but that he planned to go out there and give his best performance. He advanced to the second round with 10 other quarterbacks after he threw a series of slants, deep outs and curls in the first round.

Biaggi plans to attend some Ivy League football camps this summer as he sorts out his plans for college.
