NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference announced its 2011-12 academic honor roll on Wednesday and Iona College had a school-record number of student-athletes on the list.
Iona had 171 student-athletes on the list of the 1,569 honorees. The Gaels recorded the second highest total among MAAC member schools. A total of 341 student-athletes enrolled at Iona for the 2011-12 academic year.
First-year student-athletes who completed two semesters at their respective institutions were eligible for the list for the first time this year.
A student-athlete must have a minimum grade point average of 3.20 on a 4.0 scale. Full-time and associate member schools in the MAAC across all 24 sports sponsored by the conference are eligible for the honor roll.
Rising senior track athlete Jenny Kurz, who majors in international business, is one of three Gaels on the list with a 4.0 GPA. Fellow track teammate and rising sophomore Regina Neumeyer, an information systems major, also earned a 4.0 GPA. Graduate student and men’s soccer player Alvaro Torrecilla, who is pursuing his MBA in Marketing, earned a 4.0 GPA in the 2011-12 academic year.
The following ten athletes earned grade point averages of 3.90 or more: Gregory Badura (men's rowing), Haley D'Angelo (women's basketball), Melanie Hay (softball), Tara Jameson (women's cross country/track), Thomas Martin (men's soccer), John Nargoski (baseball), Katie Niblock (women's cross country/track), Kara Nowakowski (women's swimming and diving), Michael O'Dowd (men's cross country/track), and Stephanie Sumcizk (women's lacrosse).
