NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The NCAA has granted Iona College men’s basketball transfer Tavon Sledge a hardship waiver that will allow him to play for the Gaels immediately in the 2012-13 season.
Sledge, a native of Spring Valley, N.Y., transferred to Iona after he spent his freshman year at Iowa State. Normally, a transfer would have to wait a year before stepping onto the court, but Sledge will be able to play right away and will have three years of eligibility at Iona.
"I'm grateful for the opportunity that I have been blessed to not only be able to play this year, but to be able to earn my degree a year earlier," Sledge said. "My family and I thank the NCAA, my coaching staff and Iona administrators for their help with the process."
Sledge, a point guard, played in just eight games for Iowa State. The Rockland County native is a graduate of Half Hollow Hills West High School in Dix Hills on Long Island, where he earned All-State, All-Long Island and All-Conference honors twice.
NYHoops.com named him to the All-New York City First Team, and Hoopscoop.com ranked him as the 79th best player in New York state in the class of 2011. Sledge averaged 25.3 points, 5.2 assists and 3.5 steals per game and led his team to an 18-6 record and an appearance in the Class AA state semifinals.
Iona head coach Tim Cluess was pleased with the NCAA’s decision.
"I commend my staff and our compliance administrators once again in their tireless effort and assistance in preparing the waiver for Tavon," Cluess said. "The NCAA is also thanked for their diligence in the decision-making process to allow him to play."
Iona opens its season on Nov. 9, when it hosts Denver at the Hynes Center for a 9 p.m. game.
