Feliu Fuels New Rochelle Hockey to 3-1 Win

RYE, N.Y. -- Early in the second period of the New Rochelle-Rye Town/Harrison hockey game, the Titans were unleashing shots and meeting with little success.

New Rochelle goalie Greg Feliu was making save after save, frustrating Rye Town/Harrison with each stop. The Titans continued peppering Feliu the remainder of the period and came away with nothing.

Meanwhile, the Huguenots gained confidence from the play of their goalie, scoring twice in a 32-second span in a 3-1 win at Playland Ice Casino. The Huguenots improved to 11-4, winning for the eighth time in their last nine games. They also swept the season set with the Titans and snapped their four-game winning streak, dropping the Titans to 8-6.

Feliu stopped 29 of 30 shots. The only shot on goal that eluded him was an Ian Bass deflection of an Evan Jacobs shot.

John Tenore and Kenny McLean netted goals 32 seconds apart in the second period and Brett Barry added a power-play goal in the third period. The pressure in the second period resulted in a lot of action in front of Feliu, who was saved twice by defenseman Nick Sioufas clearing the puck from the crease.

“Scrambles are always a lot of fun,” said the soft-spoken Feliu. “If it wasn’t for my defense I wouldn’t have played as good.”

Feliu made 12 saves in the second period, many in the first seven minutes, including three during a two-man Rye Town/Harrison advantage.

Following the penalty kill, New Rochelle scored at the 8:18 mark. Joey Ramondelli picked off a clearing pass along the left-wing boards and fed it across ice to Tenore. The Huguenot forward lost control, momentarily, as he was turning his back, flipped a back-hander in for his second of the season.

Thirty two seconds later, Barry’s fore-checking put the puck on his stick and he found Wagner in the slot. Wagner’s wrist shot hit the back of the net for his seventh of the year.

“The momentum usually lasts about two-to-four minutes after a goalie makes a good save or saves,” Feliu said. “Those goals put the momentum back on our side. We were able to get the puck deep, make their defense work hard and put pressure on them.”
