NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Eight Mustangs earned spots in the national championships Friday when Monroe College track and field athletes competed at the NYC Gotham Cup in New York City’s Armory Track and Field Center.
Monroe now has 13 track and field athletes who will compete at the NJCAA Indoor National Championships in Texas in March.
Freshman Christopher Lewis sprinted his way to a 6.92 in the 60m dash, both a personal record and a national qualifying time. Teammate Earl Lucas posted a time of 50.00 in the 400m event to qualify, as well.
Shanice Cameron qualified in both the individual 400m and the women’s 4X400m relay events. She posted a 59.01 in the 400m event and the team totaled 3:59 in the relay.
NJCAA Indoor Champion and Jamaican national record holder K’don Samuels tied for second in the vault with 15’9”.
The men’s distance medley relay team of Lashley Winter, Joel Johnson, Damian Walker and Ansu Sowe also qualified for nationals. Sowe, the only sophomore on the squad, led the team to a time of 10:35, almost five seconds less than the national qualifying teams.
