Doughty officially committed to the school and is the first Croton baseball player since Dave Carr in 1978 to play Division I baseball. The lefty committed to Holy Cross in August but made it official Thursday outside the gymnasium of his high school.
“It’s nice. I’ve been waiting to do it. It just took a while to set everything up,” Doughty said. “But I committed and now it’s good to finally have it over with.”
Doughty looked at schools for a year before he ultimately decided on Holy Cross. He played for the Taconic Rangers during summer and traveled around the country with the team, an experience he said helped expose him to college coaches.
The senior said he decided early but several schools courted him. He considered Lafayette but ultimately chose Holy Cross.
“Holy Cross was always at the top of my list so I just wanted to solidify that,” Doughty said.
Family, friends and school officials watched and celebrated as Doughty signed the paper. And, as he put the pen down and signed his name, he felt a twinge of nervousness.
“It was just kind of nostalgic, pretty much,” Doughty said. “Ever since I was a little kid, I really wanted to play Division I baseball.”
Doughty reached one milestone Thursday, but a big one still sits in front of him: the day he actually puts on the uniform for Holy Cross. He expects to see some playing time in his freshman year as the school will lose 12 seniors and two junior draft picks.
“I think that’s going to be the biggest moment where it finally sets in,” Doughty said. “When I finally step on the field and get some playing time.”
