NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Injuries forced College of New Rochelle point guard Alyssa Pechin to take an unwanted break from basketball this season.
A fractured spine and bruised kidney sidelined Pechin for three weeks. Then stitches to her chin resulted in another week off.
Now that Pechin is injury-free, the Yonkers’ resident has returned to the lineup and is the Hudson Valley Women’s Athletic Conference basketball player of the week.
In two College of New Rochelle wins, Pecchin averaged 16 points per game, including 22 against NYU-Poly. Pechin is second on the team in scoring at 11.8 points per game.
“I didn’t even know I received the award until my teammate Jasmine Brandon told me,” said Pechin, an Our Lady of Victory graduate. “I was surprised.”
Pechin followed up her player-of-the-week honors with 21 points and five steals against New Jersey City University. On the season, Pechin is averaging three assists and three steals per game.
Pechin said the three weeks spent recuperating from the back and kidney injuries were difficult. Once she got back into action, she was sidelined again with stitches to her chin.
“It was hard not being able to play together with my teammates,” said Pechin, a business major. “It feels good to be back to myself. When I first came back, I was still sore and didn’t want to injure myself.”
Pechin’s return has coincided with the Blue Angels' winning two of their last three games. In her past five games, Pechin is averaging 16.4 points a game.
