Ward Elementary Kicks Off Baseball Themed Read-a-thon In New Rochelle

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – While Met and Yankee fans will be singing “Take Me Out To The Ballgame,” this October during the postseason, elementary school students in New Rochelle will be saying “Take Me Out To The Ward Library” during the annual Read-a-thon this month.

On Thursday, students and faculty members at William B. Ward Elementary School kicked off their baseball-themed reading game, where they will attempt to read one million minutes collectively as a school during the month of October.

Co-chaired by Lisa Matchovsky and Cecelia Vincitore, students will be rewarded for hitting the books this month, with the classrooms and students who read the most minutes and raise the most money being eligible for prizes.

As an added bonus, if the students reach their goal, Principal Franco Miele will play on the student’s basketball team in the annual staff vs. students basketball game.

According to Melissa Panszi-Riebe, who helped organize and publicize this year’s Read-a-thon, the event “gives the students ownership of the fundraiser. They read more minutes, they have the opportunity for more prizes, and the event is a bigger success; while at the same time they are reading.”
