Holy Name of Jesus School will hold a closing mass and honors ceremony on Friday.
Holy Name was chosen as one of the New York Catholic schools that must shut its doors, the Archdiocese of New York announced in January. Some parents fought with petitions to keep the school but were unable to save it.
In November, the Archdiocese announced that Holy Name of Jesus was at risk of shutting down, including four other schools in Westchester County. The school's tuition, enrollment and demographics, were taken into account in the Archdiocese’s decision.
The school’s website still has a page dedicated to donations, calling for help from the community to help raise funds to keep the school sustainable. “On average, tuition in the Archdiocese of New York's elementary schools covers only 65% of student costs. We receive approximately $300 a student (or 6%) from government sources. The balance must be funded by our supporters,” the site reads.
The school has enrolled students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. Tuition has varied by grade and whether the family is a member of the parish, but has averaged about $6,000 a year per student.
