NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- First-year Thornton-Donovan School junior Trent Shillingford has been selected to participate in the Japan Youth Exchange Program run by Youth For Understanding (YFU).
YFU, a nonprofit organization that advances intercultural understanding, mutual respect and social responsibility through educational exchanges for youth, families and communities, will send Shillingford to Japan for six weeks in June.
While there, he will be immersed in the culture of his host family with the possibility of taking part in various cultural activities such as “a tea ceremony, flower arrangement, or a traditional local summer festival.” Since school will still be in session in Japan, he will also have a chance to audit classes at local schools.
His enrollment at Thornton-Donovan during the 2013-14 school year has furthered his travel-study aspirations, the school said. In February, Shillingford traveled with a small contingent of Thornton-Donovan student ambassadors to participate in a Guatemalan exchange program. In May, he toured Alaska with members of his school community as part of its thematic curriculum.
Shillingford also studied abroad last year at Symbiosis College in India.
