NABA is a professional trade organization that works to increase the participation of African-Americans and other minorities in the accounting profession. Its student chapters offer accounting majors and others interested in the field myriad career development, job placement and networking opportunities, as well as scholarships and other resources for continuing related academic pursuits.

Monroe College's NABA chapter, which was founded in 1996 and is one of 150 student chapters across the country, was recognized as the Eastern Region's "Top Chapter" during NABA's Annual National Conference & Expo held in Las Vegas June 10 through 13. Thirteen of Monroe's students were in attendance to receive the honor.

"The 'Top Chapter' honor is designed to recognize the one student chapter in each region with demonstrated excellence in programming, recruitment efforts and membership engagement levels, and we are delighted that our efforts to build an impactful chapter were recognized at the national conference," said Michael Blattman, assistant dean of Monroe's School of Business & Accounting and the faculty advisor for its NABA chapter.

"I congratulate members of the Monroe College NABA chapter on this impressive accomplishment, which underscores the value of their education and professional commitment."

NABA has 150 student chapters divided into four regions. Monroe College is one of approximately 50 student chapters in NABA's Eastern region; other regional chapters are hosted by colleges in Connecticut; Maryland; Massachusetts; New Jersey; New York; Pennsylvania; Virginia; and Washington, D.C.

In addition to their collective recognition as Top Chapter, attending members from the Monroe College chapter were equally successful on an individual level during the conference.

All 13 students secured interviews for career opportunities and internships with the "Big Four" and other major national accounting firms, as well as many of the Fortune 500 companies, recruiting at the conference.
