New Rochelle's Issac E. Young Girls Learn iPhone Workings

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- Students at Isaac E. Young Middle School participated in a Women in Technology workshop, an IBM-sponsored program that brings real-world understanding of science, technology, engineering and math to sixth- and seventh-grade girls in select Westchester County schools.

The program took place from 8:30-11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, at Isaac E. Young Middle School, 270 Centre Ave.

During this mobile app development workshop, students learn the basics of iPhone programming from IBM volunteers. After the seminar, students continue exploring computer science by competing in an app design challenge. Young programmers are grouped in teams and tasked with developing an app to improve the performance of a routine task. Students are also required to build a prototype and present it to their peers.

According to Principal Anthony Bongo, the goal of bringing the WIT Workshop to IEYMS is empowering female students to see a future shaping the digital landscape.

“We’re giving our young women the creative confidence they’ll need to lead in this exciting and growing professional space,” said Bongo.

The innovative partnership is coordinated by the Isaac E. Young counseling department.
