New Rochelle Students Give Back to Community

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Fourteen Daniel Webster students made a commitment to give back to their community after starting their own business this past fall.

“It feels good to do the right thing and help our community,” said Hannah Bases, one of the students.

The students, who are part the school’s fourth and fifth grade Kaleidoscope class, have turned a simple business plan to make money into a good cause. The group makes wallets, purses, hair bows and bookmarks, then sells them to classmates, friends and families. The profits are donated to charity.

The group most recently donated $150 to the New Rochelle Humane Society on Sunday.

“We like to have fun, be creative and make a difference at the same time,” said Bases in an e-mail.  “We love duct tape, so we started making stuff and selling it. When we realized how much money we were making, we decided to donate some of it to the New Rochelle Humane Society. We also plan to donate to other charities, too.”

Other organizations have caught on to the students' good nature.

“The PTA let us sell our products at the Webster Valentine's Day Boutique,” said Bases in the e-mail.

The students involved in the business are Zoe Heller, Elexis Diaz, Carly Lieberman, Casey Young, Katie D'Alois, Sophia Smith, Sara Battaglino, Ari Ceppi, Bases, Juliana Ochacher, Hanna Hillesheim, Ava Sunko, Emily Gorman-Cooper and Abby Dennin.
